Connecting All-in-One PC with a touchscreen

It is possible to connect an All-in-One (AIO) computer to an external touchscreen monitor, provided the AIO has a video output, such as HDMI-out or DisplayPort-out. Many AIOs are designed as closed systems and lack this port. If the port is present, the AIO functions as a standard PC. The connection requires two cables: a video cable for the image signal and a USB cable that sends the touch input from the monitor to the computer. The operating system usually recognizes the monitor automatically.

Video output is Crucial

The most important requirement is the presence of a video output (such as HDMI-out or DisplayPort-out) on the All-in-One PC. Many AIO models have only video inputs or no video ports at all, which makes connecting an external display impossible. Always check the specifications of the AIO to verify that it can drive an external display.

Connection with Two Cables

Two separate connections are required for proper operation of the touchscreen monitor. A video cable (e.g. HDMI) provides the transmission of the image signal. In addition, a USB cable must be connected between the monitor and the AIO. This USB connection communicates the touch information (touch input) to the computer, enabling operation.

Software & Driver Compatibility

Modern operating systems such as Windows automatically recognize most touchscreens as an 'HID-compliant touch screen. Usually, no additional software installation is required. However, advanced features or calibration may require installing the monitor manufacturer's specific drivers for full compatibility.

Difference Video input and output

A common confusion is the difference between video-in and video-out. Some AIOs have an HDMI input, which means that the AIO itself can be used as a monitor for another device (such as a laptop). This is the opposite of powering an external screen, which requires an explicit video-out on the AIO.
